Hi All,

Anyone know where I can get two of these original 'tip-out' tool boxes like the one on the tractor in this picture? They were original IH equipment.

Too funny! I have two of those on my 2N Ford, hanging from home made brackets mounted to the radius rods. Were they stock on the 666 as well?

I've got two hanging on the wall in the shop. They both are alike & have the mounting brackets like the ones on the left side like on a 656 or 686. I suppose the brackets could be cut off. If you can't find closer ones, these are in western Pa!

Hi Jim,

I thought these tip-outs were all the same? No?

I need one for a 686, which should mount on the left side tucked up in beside the starter (as I recall) and one for a 966, which mounts on the right under that right battery.

Allan: For some reason I can't open your photo. However if it is the same tool box as original equipment on 656, I saw exact reproductions of these being offered by one of the after market operations. Just don't remember which one. I saw it online when I was looking for Farmall 130 4x16 front wheels, just last week. Those tool boxes were offered on most Farmalls back in 60s. Box is same on most, just the mounting different.

Yes, and the old tractors just don"t look right without that tilt-out box, to my way of thinkin".

Rumor has it that ol" Sloroll hauled his pint around in that box too. :>)

When did they start the stainless mufflers on the 9? I see this fellow's tractor's has one too as does mine.

My first 9 had a 'black' muffler. Did they start that in '76?

Allan: I've never seen anything but black muflers on 66 series. Few straight pipes that where chrome. For awhile anyhow.

As far as I know all 66 and 86 series tractors with mufflers, came with black mufflers. All the pictures I've seen of them in books they are black. Its the replacement ones that CNH sells that are silver. My 686 and 1066 have the original black ones. I was going to drop you a note awile back when you posted pics of your 686 that your muffler color was incorrect but I forgot to.

start calling around to salvage yards but be aware there are many variations of the box depending on how it was mounted.

on 2nd thought, those realy are a rather worthless box and you might do better buying a larger box to fasten on the franme rail. I like the looks of those diamond plate boxes at Orschlens

Hi Bill,

I'm serious as a heart attack.

That's not my tractor; a guy was nice enough to send me a picture of his and this is the only picture I've ever been able to find that shows that original box.

I've been missing that darned tool box ever since I bought the 686. Now, I'm missing the silly thing times two!

Everyone knows that it is an absolute 'must' to carry a 12" Cresent wrench, small ball-peen hammer, pliers and a large Vice-grip in these old tractors. It is just basic IH 101. :>)

I suppose most of them went away when the cabs were put on? I've seen em at farm sales on hay racks. I'll keep my eyes peeled. You need a broken ratchet handel in that box too, just incase you lose your hitch pin.

A crescent wrench,screwdriver and a pair of pliers and mabe a few special tools for the impement you are using will save many a trip back to the shop. But then again, You will have every tool but the one you need and have to go in to the shop anyway.

Actually, a pair of fencing pliers in that box covers most needed repairs, since the material needed for the repairs is as close as the nearest fence. Just take the pliers, cut off a hunk of wire, make the repair, and away ya go!

Duct tape, JB Weld, etc. all are great, but the neat thing about wire is that everyplace you could break down, the meadow or pasture is surrounded by it- always within walking distance! Allan, we're straight south of Valentine. Find the town of Brownlee on your map and we're just a little to the north. My great-great-grandfather built a store and started that town. Something I've always forgot to mention on here was that in his store he was a McCormick dealer(along with just about anything else the settlers of the time would need to buy), and one year in the 1890's he sold more McCormick mowing machines than any other dealer in the state...so I guess you could say that IH Red is in my genes...
