Mornin' All,

So darned cold outside this morning that the cat won't even stay out!

Anyway, I just remembered something the local "Red Mech" told me yesterday when he was explaining the 966 injection pump "hazzard". :>)

He said that hose coming from the final fuel filter to the pump had to be replaced because someone along the line had put a generic fuel line on this location. He says this is a sure-fired way to ruin a good pump in time.

He says when you kill the engine, that the fuel in the pump is still moving and the abrupt 'stop' is akin to shutting off a water line real fast and getting that "banging of the pipes" noise.

Says the hose has to be of the exact length, made of the correct materials and be of the proper diameter and thickness so that it will flex and "absorb" this sudden 'thump'.

Further, that this is a 'harmonic effect' and that this generic hose, which is on there now, is hard on the pump.

Found that interesting,

Allan

Allen, that line absorbs the vibrations of the transfer pump, which is built into the injection pump. Fuel flows from the tank, through the primary filter, through the transfer pump, goes back to the final filter, then through the special rubber hose, and to the injection pump. Replacing this hose with any old hose is definetly a good way to ruin the pump, not just the vibration, but the hose flaking apart on the inside.

Now I am totally confused. Is the hose you mentioned on the suction side or pressure side of the pump? Not familiar with the exact set up you have, but every set up I have seen has the filters before/suction side of pump. If this is the case in your set up, length would make no difference, diameter too small could restrict fuel flow. or soft material could collapse under suction.
If it is after/pressure side of injection pump, that is a whole different thing. There the lines have to be all the same, diameter, length,& material. There is a definite, although small, amount of stretch in the line & compression of the fuel under the high pressure. Even shortening a line 1/4 inch to replace a bad fitting will mess up things. Now I suppose I have really confused everybody, sorry abouty that.

Hi Willie,

No, not on the secondary side.

This is the rubber-like hose coming from the filter to the front of the pump.

I don't know if this is a return, a feed, or what, but like Cowman says, when the tractor is running, it is definitely under pressure because it actually "throbs".

Sorry for the bad picture, only one I could find.

The other concern with that hose is that if it is the wrong hose it will transmit vibrations to the injector pump and can quickly ruin the pump.

Mornin Allan, Im a volunteer firemen, and in the fire service that is called a water hammer, can definitely do damage! Little different application on your part but the same principle.

Mornin Allan. Seems to me my dad had that same deal with his 9 a long time ago after an overhaul they rebuilt the pump and put a new hose on. The hose was the wrong size or something can't remember for sure but the tractor lost about 40hp. The guys finally figured it out after a while.

Hi Todd,

Yes Sir, that is exactly what he said.

If the hose is wrong, it could cut power on one hand or use too much fuel for the given horsepower on the other.

Does your dad still have that 1066 that they stroked out to a 1466? That tractor is kind of a legend around here and I still hear people talking about it from time to time. :>)

Mornin' Casey,

Aw, I'm such a picky ol' fuddy-duddy; everything has got to be 'just right' and on a normal day with a knee-jerk reaction, I'd just go ahead and put on a new pump without givin' it a second thought.

But since this whole 'scheme of things' is nothing more than a over-sized hobby and is not critical to my business to any great extent, I'm gonna leave it alone. The tractor can certainly be down for a period of time in the future and it won't pull any skin off the end of my nose.

I just like to bounce these things off of you guys with your experience; there is lots of common sense hangin' around here.

Now, if I were depending on it everyday like Cowman, Todd, Captn' or a lot of the rest of you, I'd most certainly put her on there, just to ward off a break-down.

Allan

ya, allan, I'd put on a new hose. It runs onder pressure all the time and just throbs.
