It be me again; My M has been converted over to 12V. The amp guage pegs out on the + side while running and the coil gets VERY hot while running. there is no voltage reg on the tractor. I had the Alt. tested and it charges and doesn't have a built in reg.

Does anyone out there have a wireing diagram on how a 12V system should look like?

Thanks, Bubba

Also, get a 12 to 6 volt step-down resistor so that the coil and points remain at 6 volts

I just got through doing the same thing. Two things to check: (1) switch to a Negative ground and (2) switch the wires on the coil -- the wire from the on/off switch should be attached to the "+" terminal on the coil since ground is now negative.

Bob M, if you are following this line, how about producing a wiring diagram for switching to a 12-volt alternator.

As mentioned below Bob M has an excellent wiring diagram in articles section, if the coil gets hot it is probably a 6 volt coil and you do not have a resister ahead of it. Your points will probably burn out rapidly also if you don"t have the resister.

If the alternator you're using REALLY doesn't have a built-in voltage regulator, the easiest fix would be to install an internally regulated Delco instead, and connect it up as per Bob M's diagrams.

Ok who is Bob M and how do I get a copy of his wiring diagram. I did find out today by looking at a Super C that the coil was just just backwards. The + side was conected to the points and the - side was leading to the amp guage box. I changed to - to the points and the + wire to the amp box. I run the motor up and the coil did not get hot. Yes, the coil is a 12V coil. What next? Where do I put the ballist resistor at?

thanks
Bubba

Since BobM has not stepped forward to defend himself, here's a link to his diagrams:

You need to check a couple things first. Some 12 volt coils require a resistor, some do not. If you look closely at your coil top, it may say "use with resistor". If you don't know what you have for a coil, I'd either get a resistor from NAPA, or buy a 12 volt coil that you know to have an internal resistor.

As for your ammeter - put a voltmeter on your battery while the engine is running. Does it show approximately 14 volts? If it does, your ammeter shouldn't peg all the way once your battery nears a full charge. If you are reading way over 14 volts, the regulator is probably ka-put in your alternator. This will cook your battery and may also be the reason why your coil gets so hot.
