Can anyone tell me the steps to adjust the carb mixture to reduce richness? I've got slight carbon exhaust on idle and low rpm, and a little carbon on the plugs. Occasional misfire(not backfire) at idle and low rpm. This is a new rebuild and restoration project. The plug and valve gaps are exact, ignition excellent and starts immediately, air cleaner bath okay, no dieseling.

As you face the carb, the horizontal screw to the left is the idle mixture. Close it and open one full turn. That should get you in the ball park. On the high speed angling out the bottom, close it and open out 2 full turns.

After warming up and at high speed, turn in the high speed screw until it starts losing power and then open up 1/2 turn. Same with the idle but only open back up 1/4 of a turn or so.

When you get around 10 hours on that engine, make sure to retorque the head bolts and check the valve gap clearances. I had a duzy of a time with my valves seating until I had a few hours on the engine. TISCO valves seating into NAPA and IH seats I think was the culprit of the seating problem. I should have had NAPA lap the valves in hindsight.

The screw at the bottom of the carb. is the fuel adjustment screw. Turn this in and then open it 2 3/4 turns. The air adjustment screw is at an angle to the carb and should be open 1 turn. The other screw is the idle adjustment screw and is perpendicular to the carb. Turn it CW to increase idle speed and CCW to decrease.
