The previous owner of my 1959 six volt 140 had 6 gauge battery cables and to make matters worse, one cable was about 2 feet too long. Starting was a scary experience as it was slow to get turning over. Installed 1 gauge cables today and now it starts almost as soon as you pull on the starter rod!

My thanks to everyone for previous posts recommending large diameter cables.

I must say how many people think a wire is a wire! You dun good and that is how to do it. Now something I will add. Go to your local INTERSTATE battery dealer and look at the OPTIMA units. I put one in my Dodge and the starter just sings even when WAY cold. Twelve volts at 1000 amps. when it is 70 degrees. A normal battery will give you about 625 amps. at 70 degrees. At 32 it puts out 800 amps. The six volt model is one half of the twelve. They can be placed any way you want them cause they are damp cells. Aircraft, race cars, boats, Etc. THEY REALY kick butt! Check them out. Now for the price. At Pep Boys they go for around $99.00. If you find Interstate's warehouse; and I have the district one about 10 miles from me, it gets better. They sell used and warranty returns for only $30.00! I have bought over 15 of them this way for friends and neighbors and have only had two bad ones. Took them back the next day and got another. They give you a six month on them. I was at the warehouse when one of the trucks came in off it's run about a month ago. Got a brand new Optima in the plastic wrap cause it was out of date! What a deal. LOVE these very powerful batteries! You will not regret. Lookthem up on internet , Put name in one word. Jeffcat

I had cable problems with my truck a few years back when unknown to me,there was corrosion below the insulation and it left only about 2 strands still passing current.I solved that....I custom made 2/0 cables for it.End of cable problems!
Just as a comparison,2/0 cables are the size of log skidder/tractor-trailer truck cables.

I build my own cables. I get the cable from a local welding supply business and purchase the cable ends from NAPA. This way I can make them just the right length.

Hi John, That's where I get my cables and I make them up with soldered spades. People make a big mistake in cleaning the battery terminals and not buffing the spades. When copper corrodes it makes a good insulator. A lot of people are sold batteries when a battery cable is the culprit. Have a Merry Christmas, Hal

Bill, What length battery cables did you buy. I don't think I'll make the drive to TSC this month so maybe I can order them? Thanks Ramon

Ramon: Look for repair or supply shops serving the big truck industry. These guys use 1 gauge even on their 12 volt systems. Quite often they will have what you need made up, as those big diesels use cables lenght you need between batteries. If not they make them to fit.

Hugh,

Is this why my 310 German won't start? ('Course it is 3 degrees outside too).

:>)

Allan: I wont speak for those German deisels, they were designed for another climate other than winter areas of North America.

But then who knows, I see a lot of tractors, all makes and sizes, people have replaced old cables with something from NAPA that works on a Honda. It just aint going to cut it on 6 volt or diesels of any size.
