getting gas to the fuel pump, but pump doesn't seem to be pumping. Assume that it needs to be rebuilt. Does anyone have information on rebuilding one of thees? Or any other ideas or suggestions. Also would like any information on checking the oil in one of these. This is a new project my wife got me into.

Paul is right, rebuilding is easy on these.

However, before you start, check two things - or one thing twice, depending on your definition.

The valves regulating intake and outflo are just little hexagons of bakelite, held by springs. Carefully remove the cap nut from each, and don't lose the pieces when the gas trapped in the line pushes them out of their seat. (Have the gas line turned off first). Clean each, and the metal it seats on with a Q-tip and try again.

The other thing to know about these machines is that the fuel pump is very very marginal all the time. A lot of folks disconnect the fuel line from the carb and use a gravity feed from an external tank to start things off. I use an old tiller tank.

After getting things pumping, get rid of the external tank and you are back to normal.

Good chance that the pump needs to be rebuilt. They are dead simple to do, kits available from Ride Equipment, 814-226-9200.

Checking the oil is done via two petcocks on the side of the oil pan, one slightly higer than the other. When filling, open the top one, and pour in oil until it starts to drip out the petcock. When checking, open the bottom one, as long as oil drips out, you're good to go.

Just one more thing to add. When ever my F-14 has sat around a while with out being run, I squirt a little fuel down the carb to prime it. the pump will NEVER fill the carb by hand cranking it, all it will do is wear ya out. Steve T

First thing, Thank You all VERY much. This is a very new type project for me. The tractor was my wife's Grandfather's, and he had bought it new. But all it's paper work & such is missing. I understand the petcoks on how checking the oil, but where do you put the oil in at? Am going to try to get out by the tractor today to mess around with it, don't get much time to during the week. Any other thoughts, ideas, or such is greatly appreciated.

Bob,

Just in front of the magneto is a round cap with two wings on it. Looks similar to a wing nut on top of a round lid. This unscrews and is the oil filler cap.

to JRM-- Thank You--I thought that is where it went, but was not 100% sure. Did not want to mess it up. Does anyone know the procedure for timing the magneto? I have had it rebuilt, and know it's hot, just need to put it back on and get it set. Now have fuel pump off--will be working on that.

I have done it, but that was about 15 years ago. I will bring my Owners Manual and Magneto Service Manual home tomorrow. I can scan the info and e-mail it to you.
