Trying to replace the rear axle seal on my 404. I&T manual says to remove the wheel, then hub/flange and then one should be able to get to the seals/etc. However, I can't figure out how to get the c-clip that is under the wheel retaining bolt (the one that goes into the axle) out. There doesn't seem to the a groove to expand the clip into... Do I need to remove the axle tube assembly first? Thanks!

62-404: I trying to see what your problem is. I have the IT manual IH-21. Which end of the axle is this clip you speak of? I have never had any experience with 404, but most IH you have to remove clip or bolt from inner end of axle by reaching through hole where pto goes. Some tractors have clips and some bolts holding bull gear on inner end of axle. The IT manual is not very well written on this subject, however it does show in Figure IH578, page 33, bull gear 11 is held on by washer 9 and cap screws 10. That is for 200, 230 and 240. Note it says on 404 and 2404 the bull gear is retained by a clip. That is all inside differential case as shown in Figure IH579. The axle and axle carrier will only come off after that bull gear has been removed.

I hope this is some help to you.

Hugh -

I have the same manual and I agree it is not well written. The clip I speak of is the one on the outermost end of the axle, under the wheel cap (the part that is red if the wheel is white), not inner. From what you describe, I think I need to remove the c-clip from the bull gear inside the differential, which is accessible only if I remove the hydraulic pump assembly/cover which is the top of the differential case on my 404. It is not accessible from anywhere outside the case. I wanted to be sure I was interpreting it correctly before I tore into the tractor to that extent. Thanks!

62-404: As I said before, never had any direct experience with 404. However to remove axle on most IH, one must remove that bull gear, then unbolt the axle carrier. Then get axle and axle carrier on a work bench.

Hugh - thanks again for the suggestion, I will approach it that way over the weekend.
