Moving the wheels out on a Super A

Question: can I expand the wheels on my SA to make them 48 inches instead of the current 40? I think that would mean I could get one or two more rows. Or do I need to go to a bigger tractor when it's time...
Thank you,
Bill in sunny central Alabam (after days of pouring rain)

The lugs that the bolts go thru to hold the rim to the hub are off center in the rim. Thus the tires will stick out further (be wider) depending on which side of the tractor they are on. You could just turn them around but the tread would be going in the wrong direction. Also having the lugs on the inside or outside of the hub will make a difference equal to the thickness of the lug and the hub. The 4 notches in the hub are so you can spin the rims until the rim lugs line up with the notches and then push the rims in towards the tractor. Be careful that the valve stem doesn't get sheared off doing this and doesn't hit anything when the wheel turns. Dishing the hubs in or out gives you a whole new set of width settings also. All of these are carefully engineered to give you various width setting in 2" increments. Careful swaping tires side to side as they are heavy, especially if they are flluid filled. Dave.

Thanks for all the help; I'm getting the picture. The one thing I still don't understand is "dishing": "Dishing the hubs in or out gives you a whole new set of width settings also." Dave BN, this sounds like what I need to do, but how do you "dish" the hubs?
Thanks very much,
Bill

manual says you can set rear wheels to 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68. just by switching rim/wheel to different settings. just do not place left wheel on right side (right side is heavier for counter balance). wh - cullman al

not wheel weights - right wheel is a cast wheel for counter balance on offset engine. you can as many wheel weights as you want - altho i would hate to use one with front wheel weights. they steered hard enough in plowed ground without any more weight on front.

must not have the hillsides we have here. heavy wheel goes on right side for counter balance. at least that is where we always had them - of course we only ran 6 counting the 100"s and the 140. they worked real good cultivating 90 -100 acres of sweet potatoes every year. we allways ran on 44" settings. only let one turn over - thankfully no one was hurt. manual shows all the various setting the wheels can be placed at.

Thanks to all who responded. When I get the wheels off, I guess I'll figure out how to expand the axle? Or is it tricky? My operator's manual from Binder hasn't arrived yet. Maybe that will show it.
If (when?) I run into trouble, you'll most likely hear from me again. I sure appreciate all of you taking the time to respond, to this and to my other queries.

By flipping the wheel centers over, flipping the tires over, and moving them to the inside or outside of the wheel centers, you can get many different widths.
