I just drained the engine oil in my 49 C. I got out 6 small metal balls about 5/32 in diameters. What the heck inside my engine would have ball bearings. I am thinking possible something in one of the following: governor, hydraulic pump, or the distributor. Everything seems fine, no noise and good oil pressure, but I am worried now. Maybe by some chance these got dropped in the filler somehow over the years, but I am not sure. PLEASE HELP…..

Me being sort of skeptical, and not knowing yet how straight the drop is from the filler, I wonder if someone mayby dropped some bearings in around Hallowe'en?

Would make a nifty practical joke if one wasn't worried about the chance of ruining the engine...

Someone refresh my memory but isnt there an idler gear in the front of the motor that has a bearing on it or am I thinking about something else?.I would tend to lean towards that before the governor bearing. Those are smaller than that.

The governor thrust bearing balls are smaller than that, seems like they were about 1/16, maybe 3/32. Doesn't take much to remove the governor, though, it can be done with the radiator in place. Think it's 5 bolts. New thrust bearing is about $4-5.

Fred the balls on the SIXTY FIVE dollar thruster on the H are 5/32 or even larger. I think the probability of it being the thruster in the C are pretty high.

The C, B and A use the same engine, and as far as I know, the same governor. Suppose everybody pays $65, or was that a "special" price for big city bankers? (Big Mike made me say that) ;o)

Hello.
Might be a good idea to drag a strong magnet along the outside of the oil pan, to 'pull' any remaining balls to the drain hole. You may need to add a solvent from the bottom to loosen sludge. On the other hand, if the balls have settled into the sludge, they're probably not going anywhere.

I would also recommend that you purchase a new oil pan gasket, get some red silicon gasket maker, and drop that pan and give it a good cleanout.

Why would you want to fool with red silicone if you're going to get a new gasket?

From experience on a half of dozen Hs and Ms over the last 10 years, the new gaskets usually leak a tad. They never seal perfectly. Corey's 51H was leaking a tad in front until I used the gasket maker. the word is misleading. Its just an excellent sealer.

I agree with ddg. Remove the governor plate cover and check the thruster bearing. Bet it's in pieces. If that happened on one of my Hs, that would be the only thing I could think of that has ball bearings that could get into the oil pan.

sounds like the govenor thrust bearings. Not too hard to check. The govenor is easy to remove, the thrust bearing is easy to get out. That's the first thing that comes to mind..... .DDG
