I have a Cub low boy, I think it is a 1952, it has an offset engine. Is this a model 154 or a 185 or?? What is the difference in the models, or is it the year of Manf. I know nothing about these, but I need to learn.

Bill,

Your tractor , if it is a Cub Lo Boy cannot be a 52. The Lo Boy was first introduced in 1955. The 154 Lo Boy and successor models looked like a large Cub Cadet and were not offset. The 154 was introduced in 68. The Farmall Cub is a heavy duty tractor that was designed for farming. The Cub Lo Boy was the same tractor with the rear axle housings turned forward and a lower front axle to give the tractor a lower profile where crop clearance was not needed. The Cub 154 Lo Boy and successor models were available with three point hitch and live pto (belt driven). The engine and drive train was basicly the same as the Cub but the engine was turned up and produced more horsepower. The 154 Lo Boy and successor models were designed for estates rather than farming and were never tested by Nebraska. The Farmall Cub was tested twice. I'd have to look it up but I think first in 48 and again in about 56. Often, tractors that had long production runs were tested more than once as gradual continual improvements were made to the tractors and over a period of years, improvements usually resulted in higher horsepower than the original versions of the same tractors. The Cub Lo Boy was rated a 10.5 belt hp and 9.4 db hp. Post your serial number and find out the year of your tractor.

Harold,

The tractor is definitely a lo boy, 90 degree rotated rear axles with short spindles on the front. The serial number from the plate attached to the right front of chassis is #15569. No letters that can be seen. The plate is very washed out, but the numbers are stamped into it. The tractor has hydraulics, with a lever arm mounted forward of the cowl, I assume to lift a belly mower. It also has a PTO just behind the left axle housing. This PTO is driven by an exposed shaft running along the left side of the transmission. This shaft is driven from a take off just in front of the transmission. The PTO has a splined shaft at 90 degrees to the tractor, that is along the line of the rear axle, pointing to the right. The unit is so close to the rear axle that I can't see how a pulley on this spline could be belted to any accessory without interference from the rear end. I have owned this tractor for nearly twenty years, and it has been sitting out back for at least sixteen of those years. I knew nothing about the tractor when I got it as it was in place of money owed to me. I would like to rebuild/restore it in the next year or so and then use it for mowing. I have about two acres to mow. I need a lot of help in getting pointed in the right direction and general info on what is available and how various accesories operated.

Thanks, Bill
