I needed some square headed bolts for my wheel weights and the only place I could find them was from a place called Fastenall.

Common carriage bolts from the hardware store will not work, the square shoulder part is just not right. I don't want to make any waves here, but what are you guys thinking about on the square head or even hex head bolts? Niether of those will work for the battery box.

Rusty, The IH part# is 51712D, which is indeed a square head 7/16 fine thread bolt with hex nut. YOu are right however, a carriage bolt just doesnt get it.

Go to local hardware store and get "carriage" bolts. If I rember correctly, I believe they are 3/8 " maybe 3/4 " long.

Been foolin around with my tractor gettin it ready for a pull comin up. Put a new Battery on it. I think you can get a hex head to fit if you looked hard enough. Tractor supply Might be just where to go. Unless you want Orig. parts. Hex head bolts from Tractor supply are the cheapest way. Its what i would do. But i ain't wanting all Orig. Parts just yet. Measure across the head of the square bolt, then go to Tractor supply and measure across the flat sections of a hex head. Find closest measurement. Might work might not. Just a thought.Hope i helped you out. Later, Farmallman

Joe, The problem with using hex head bolts is that if they become the least bit corroded from battery acid, they are very apt to spin inside the battery box which will make removing them to remove the battery a real adventure. It is certainly worth the extra effort and money to install aquare head bolts for that reason.

Boyd, YOu probably wont find square head bolts at your neighborhood hardware store. Try an industrial or wholesale fastener company, and they can probably fix you right up. If my memory serves me correctly, it called for 2 each 7/16 fine thread by 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch long. The nuts were also larger hex. They take a 3/4 wrench. OEM tractor parts carry them for $9.00 a pair.
