If you guys are looking for a "cheap" fresh air system for working with paints that contain isos, I would suggest you look for a used SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) unit. These are the units firefighters use, and many departments update them quite frequently, therefore used units are quite commonly available. They utilize "room air", not medical oxygen, so the cost for refilling tanks is minimal.

You can find them on ebay under "air pack" or "scott air pack" or SCBA. The tanks are readily refilled, well made, parts are available, and you could also utilize it in the event of a fire to help rescue your family.

The main downside is the weight on your back...but most anyone can handle it for at least an hour.

Brian, that's a good idea. However, be sure to pay special attention to the regulator as it is the only thing between the 2500 psi (or 4500 psi for the newest fire fighting systems) in the tank and the lungs.

Bill is right, and I also believe that unless something has changed you may have to have the tank certified occassionally in order to get someone to refill. I used to be in the fire service, and refilled these. I remember there was a difference between intervals on the old steel tanks, and the aluminum with fiberglass wrap. Some areas might be a tough find to get someone who had the high dollar compressor to refill unless you had a buddy on the local FD, or a scuba outfit close. The newer ones are lighter, but I certainly would not want to pack around one of the steel tanks for very long while painting, and when I finally got out of the fire service you only had less than 30 minutes of air (20 was about all I ever got out of one and it depends on your physical condition, and how fast you consume the air - and one of those on your back will increase your stress for sure).
