Boy you Red fans do like to hoot and holer and really have a nice family.THATS GOOOOD!!!! My question has to do with the Red paint. Some time back someone was telling how some tractors were painted different like for state or local government. I was up to the country last week and took a close look at the 424 and noticed that the yellow was the original color and painted over with red. After I bought it and was replacing the exaust I noticed the unexposed areas were yellow and assumed that the yellow was painted over original red. Did the factory paint the oiginal color yellow instead of yellow over red.
Keep up the good stuff especially in TALES///cant understand 1/2 what you talk of but it is interesting.

IH did paint some tractors yellow at the factory. They had a special department set up for this sort of thing.

Were these tractors directed to the general public or reserved for gov't agencies. Trying to make sense so to say of what i would consider low hours and use by a public agency.

After about 1958, if you ordered something through the Construction and Industrial Equipment side of the company, you could order it either Federal Yellow or IH Red at no extra cost, no matter if you were government or a industrial user, or just bought a tractor from an industrial dealer. And yes, some government equipment gets low use. Its not terribly uncommon.

I mnot sure on all of them but when SC buys them they get painted yellow here. They have a contract with some dealer near the capital that gets them for the state.Of course they have to be replaced every couple of years though. They always buy Deeres!!!

Alot o them are bought by different cities and towns and are refurbished by the stae. Most of what the state does is clean it up,put a new set of tires on it ans a fresh coat of primer, mainly to cover the marking. Some of them are auctioned off ot the general public except all they do with those is paint over the state numbers.I am thinking about going to one of thoe auctions and seeing what they have.

Every now and then our state has an auction where the state road crew sells off old inventory - mostly trucks, a little bit of road equipment, a bare handful of farm equipment, etc. All they usually do is spray some paint over the numbers, unless the tires are completely shot or something. The spray paint doesn't match the tractor paint half the time, but when the state gets done with it, you can bet it's pretty much a piece of junk.

Although most auctions are buyer beware,at least where I work as a state mechanic everything is disclosed.

Thinking mine must have been one of those state/local type but someone really did a good job painting it somewhere along the line No overspray, decals . good masking around things and no wires painted. Interest is that it only had 2150+/- hrs when I got it and I can't believe that any gov't would let one go that young. Except for dull paint the entire tractor looks and works young. Hey thanks again for the info and have a good one.
