I Just Purchased this tractor and have a problem with the transmission getting stuck between gears. When this happens I have to take the shifter off and pry the slides in line. Is This acommon Problem? Is The shift lever worn to Much or should I look at the slides as the Problem?

Andy: Build the end of shift lever to the size notch in one slide rail. Get it just a bit oversize so you can grind it to a rectangle. Grind the corners very slightly round. Think of it this way, if the lever end fills the notch it can't get out of there without bringing the slide to neutral.

Ocasionally this problem can result from detent balls on slide rails being bad. When you have the shift lever out just move the rails one at a time in and out of gear with a screwdriver. You should be able to feel when balls roll into detent notch.

Paul: No, I'm sorry I don't have any photos of that. When you remove the shift lever, chances are the end has worn egg shaped. The notches in the shift rails are about 5/8" long and thickness of each rail about 5/16". I always used to aim on getting this bit oversize, then grind until it shifts smoothly. Once the end of shift lever is size of that notch, then it can't get out of the notch until rail comes to neutral.

This is not something new with these tractors. It probably was rebuilt by 1965 the first time if your tractor has a loader. There may be a few tractors, that never had a loader yet to be done. Lot depends on how much of a gear jammer guy was over years.

No usally all you have to do is weld a little on the ball at the bottom of the shifter and it will usally take care of the problem. MagMan
