SA won't start after running it out of gas

The SA was running well, and we had almost finished with the 2 disc breaking plow, just beating the rain (again.) Love that plow. But then we ran it out of gas. I filled it up, hit the starter, it would cough a bit and then die. (Usually it started right up.) Then, after a few near misses at starting, there was no cough at all, not even a little one. Then the starter began grinding (12 volt) - wouldn't catch at all even by pushing the switch instead of pulling the handle. Cranking also got no response. I think the carb's in decent shape, the gas line is running when I take it off the carb to look, the gas is open to the tank and running well, the sediment bowl is clean. Anybody have an idea what's going on? Is there something that typically happens when an SA is run dry?
Thanks very much for your consideration,
Bill in west-central Alabama

Try Filling It Up First

It's a wonder anyone replied at all with that subject. You get engrossed in the process and forget about minor flaws in writing about it. A "can't see the forest for the trees" thing. Leave yourself wide open. Funny stuff.

I would pull a sparkplug to see if they're wet or
dry. It will probably start this morning after sitting all night. If it doesn't try holding
your hand over the throat of the carburetor to see if it will start. How's the pecan crop going to be this year? Hal
Be careful doing this and make sure brakes are locked and out of gear.

I used to do the hand over the carburetor trick until one day one backfired and burned the skin off my palm. :( Now if the choke won"t close fully I fix it first instead of using my hand.

I bet that would hurt, we used that on cars that we thought had bad fuel pumps. Hal

Sounds like it has sucked a small piece of dirt into a needle jet...remove the high and low speed jets and carefully blow through the needle and seat with compresed air....carefully screw the needles back in all the way, CAUTION do not run them in tight.....back the low speed screwout 3/4 turn --- the high speed out 1 1/2 turns, it should start....adjust low speed ssrew in/outuntil it runs the smoothest..... .at full throttle adjust until it runs the smothest and the fastest..... .

If you filled the gas tank and tried to restart shortly after it ran out of gas, the engine might have vapor locked. If you were plowing, the engine was probably running on the warm side and might have heat-sinked the carb. I'd just try to normally start the tractor and troubleshoot any problems from that point.

sounds like the float was stuck and it got flooded. Open throttle full to start. Mite have to tap the carb to unstick the float.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I took the carb off, opened it up, and checked it out as best as I know how. Do you think I should start to hand crank it with full choke tomorrow?

You could have sucked a piece of sediment into a passage in the carb when she ran out of gas. At least you can eliminate that by checking it out.

Thanks much for all the replies. I'll check 'em out tomorrow first thing. I can't say enough about all the help this site provides me; for a newcomer to farming - and tractors - y'all can't be beat. Looking forward to the day when I'll have something to add.
