I have a 560 Farmall (gas) and recently purchased a NH 847 round baler. The manual for the baler says it needs at least 1500 PSI of hydraulic pressure to open the door. The manual for the 560 claims that the hydraulics will put out 1500 PSI. However, it can't open the baler. I would guess that the pump is tired. The question is, should I invest in getting the pump on the 560 rebuilt, or is it a waste of time? After a rebuild will it put out the 1500 PSI or something lower?

Based on the responses, I think I'll go ahead and try to fix it. Thanks a bunch.

Ben

I have 2, 560"s and both run the NH 851 effortlessly.

You need to have some diagnostic work done there. The pump could be fine, but the relief valve spring could be weak. You wouln't know what kind of shape the pump is in until you hook the tractor up to a flow-rater. Any good farm equipment shop will be able to figure it out in about 10 minutes.

Ben: if you have determined the pump is tired, then by all means, swap it out with a rebuilt pump. I got a rebuilt pump for our 460 last year from Steel Wheel Ranch for $250 plus $25 core charge. I told Steel Wheel at the time they wouldn't be getting a core from me as the old pump was totally hosed internally.

The pump is painless to install. Be sure to mike the thickness of the old gasket/shim that goes between the pump mounting plate flange and the TA housing. This shim thickness sets up the backlash clearance between the drive gear and the pump driven gear. New gasket/shims are still available and are roughly $4.00 each. You can get one or more of these to get you close to your original gasket thickness.

The new pump will put out the 1500 psi provided the hydraulic relief valve spring isn't sacked and/or the regulator piston allows full closure of the ball valve in the regulator/relief block.

Start with another pump and go from there.

you might want to step up a little. 806 gas or diesel will be better suited for the bailer..
