Got to drive my neighbor's beat up 966 to a little disking this weekend...Needless to say the shifter was not working well. There are two levers on the right, by the steering wheel. Which one does what? I mainly used the one on the inside- 1st and reverse is all I could find... When I put it into the other gears, the tractor wanted to stall...

There should be a plate on top of the shifter that looks like this:

H 1
N 2 3
L R 4

The lettering is cast into the plate, so it's not like it could get rubbed off. Maybe it's missing off this tractor?

When the shifter mechanism gets worn, the tractor can get stuck in two gears at once. Unless this tractor is REALLY weak, or you're trying to disk in road gear, I wonder if that's not the problem.

Depending on the size of the disk, the tractor should be able to handle it in L3, L4, or H1. H2 is the fastest speed for field work. H3 and H4 are road gears.

Put the tractor in 1st Neutral. Look down to the right of the steering column just below and in front of the deck. You'll see two plates with slots in them. The slots should be lined up so the park lock can be set. If they aren't, then it's still in gear. You should be able to push the errant plate back into position with something like a hitch pin or wrench.

the inside lever is the range lever. all the way foward is high, all the way back is low the middle is netruel and over(right) and back is reverse. the outside lever(farthest right) is the gear selection lever. all the way forward is 1st, then start back for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. if the linkage is at all sloppy they can be a pain!

Thanks!

So, the shift pattern for the outside lever on the right is:

1
2
3
4

What's the lever on the left side of the control panel? Pto?

I stalled the tractor at the end of a round and it took me a 10 min to find the silly start button.. This poor tractor was rode pretty hard. There were no decals or plates to help a guy figure out anything.

the lever on the left side is for the T/A. it acts like a gear splitter without using the clutch. it's only to be used for when you are loosing power and need to down shift(like in a tough spot). you don't need to use the clutch. don't ever use it just to slow down. the tractor needs to be under load when the T/A is shifted back. the pto lever should be behind you on your right side with out a cab, not sure where if the tractor has a cab.
