I recently purchased a 1947 Farmall M and I am wondering about the hydraulics on it. It has 4 remote couplers comimg out around the area of the belt pulley. 2 on the left side. 1 on the right side and a hose coming out of the bottom of the case under the belt pulley. There is no pump by the distributor. Does this mean it has a live hydraulic system? If so how is it activated? There is no control valve on the tractor. If anyone can advise me about this I would be grateful for any help.

It sounds to me like you have the lift all. This is a pump with a self-contained tank that is driven off the transmission countershaft. The two outlets on the left side are pressure, the rear one being a delayed one. The one on the right is also pressure. The hose on the bottom sounds like it is a return line for a double acting cylinder that is plumbed into the drain hole in the tank. There may have been a valve spool added on this that was taken off before you got the tractor. There is a lever on the right side a bit below and ahead of the belt pulley that should have a rod on it that extends back to a bracket on the light bar. Pulling this all the way back will activate the hydraulics, there should be a knob on the bottom that should hold this rod about half way out. This is the hold position. All the way in will take the pressure off.
