Char-Lynn power steering

I have recently purchased a 1958 SuperM,LP,wide front from a friend in Texas. He had recently installed a Char-Lynn power steering unit on the tractor. I am having trouble with the steering "locking up" while trying to turn". It is worse at low idle but will happen at any throttle setting. I have checked on the usual stuff for the pump and am confident I have the correct flow out of the diverter to the pump. I am shearing off the bolts between the pump output shaft and the steering box input shaft which would lead me to believe I have a problem between the worm gear and the front wheels somewhere. Any light shed on the subject would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the former owner did not get the torque motor timed right. The timing has to do with the way that the torque motor is reassembled internally. Sorry that I don't have any drawings showing how to do it right but you can probably get them from "Force America" which is an "Eaton" company who now ownes the Char-Lynn Co.

GOOD LUCK

Hey Brad - I’m a bit confused here…

By “shearing off the bolts” do you mean the pins that secure the Charlynn motor output shaft coupling to the output stub shaft and steering gearbox input shaft (which incidentally should be 5/16” roll pins and not bolts) are breaking? Or is something else shearing off??

Anyway, if parts are breaking on the worm gearbox side of the motor the problem’s not with the Charlynn unit. Rather it would be caused by either: 1) bady worn/broken parts somewhere in the front end (steering gearbox/bolster/WFE linkage), or 2) a major misalignment between the steering motor and the steering gearbox input shafts.

Incidentally your Super M cannot be a ’58! (They were made only in ’52 and ’53)
