Some times starter won't start! Hit the switch... nothing. I pull the starter and jump it (hot connect to the battery) and it seems to run like a champ. I put the starter back in and it will fire up the tractor for that day. I park the tractor, remove the battery cable and seven days later hit the switch and nothing. Is it time to get a new starter? Rebuild this one?

Battery Terminals are clean
The Cable to the starter is brand new
The surface of the starter and the casing has been cleaned.
I'm going to pull it and clean the contacts with electrical contact spray. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice gentleman
worse case I drop $70 and get a new one...she's worth it!

I am having a similar problem and seem to have come to the right place. On mine it will start if I jump the starter direct with a 12 system. I put on a new switch and wii try new wires like Red said. Thanks everyone!

You may want to check to be sure that the starter is adequately grounded to the housing. My M wouldn’t start last night and I found that rust between the starter and housing was keeping it from making a good connection.

Per the other posts- corrosion is often the
culprit. Your statement- spins ok off the
tractor: I have had a similiar starter problem
where it spins freely on the bench (under no load)
and then not on the tractor. There was a flat spot on the armature and it would pass that spot
under no load, however it wouldn't get passed the
same spot under a load.

Bfox BTDT. Since you can connect it directly and it flies, then I suspect two things.

If the cable between the starter switch and the starter is old, replace it with a new 40 inch 1 gauge cable. The old cable can look good but can be corroded inside. Farmall only had a 50 year warranty on those cables! NAPA Part # 714091 BEL.

Second, you can take the starter switch apart. You might have enough corrosion inside that you are not making a good contact. You can clean it up or get a new one. NAPA Part Number ST6 ECH.

I believe Red is on track with this.Get your self a can of electrical contact cleaner clean everything up.Then see where you are.Might save a few bucks. If it is only a cable you have a nice clean starter and switch for your trouble.Good luck.

That happened on 'Old Red' H last fall. Ernie and Jeff used it for the field augur and kept pulling it to start it. This spring I changed the cable and the starter took off. The old cable was snaked through a piece of water hose. I pulled off the hose and there was no insulation!

BFox, Couple things to check...make sure the battery cable terminals and posts are clean and that you're getting a good ground on the grounding cable to the tractor frame. You could also have a sluggish bendix spring in the starter. Usually if the cables/posts are dirty all you'll get is a click from the starter. If none of this works take ur starter to a auto electric/starter/generator place and have them look at it. Most can rebuild the starter for less that $70.(+/-) Good luck. FB
