Six or 12 Volt Battery?

I bought a McCormick Deering W-4 standard gas tractor and it did not have a battery with it.
What are some of the clues to tell whether it will require a 6 volt battery or 12 volt battery?
I think the tractors were originally designed for a 6 volt battery with positive ground. The tractor now has an alternator coming off the side of the engine; is that a clue that it is a 12 volt system? Also, if it turns out that it is a 12 volt system, should the ground be negative? Lastly, what will happen if you hook up a six volt battery and the system is designed for 12 volts?

Thanks

My personal bent would be to put it back like original. That way there is no guessing. 6V is all a W4 needs. I changed my SW6TA back to 6V when I bought it. Of course, it's up to you.

With an alternator it is almost certainly 12 volt and negative ground,. I have never seena 6 volt or pos. ground alternator.

There is such a thing as a 6 volt alternator but it is highly unlikely that the tractor has one.

1st I ever heard of 6 volt alternators was from Hugh McKay. Just did a Google search and the link was nearly the first thing to show. I have never seen one.
