i had recently done a carb rebuild, put tractor w/loader thu about an hour or so of work and it ran great. however, i parked it dropped loader, let it sit for a few hours & returned for more work & found starter to click only once each time i turned the key. since then i rebuilt starter,i believe i checked wires and checked and cleaned all connections to regulator & generator. i think my next step is to see if my flywheel is stuck. any one out there have any ideas? i appreciate any help.

I'm no expert but maybe try charging your battery for a while. It may be dead and/or need replacing. I was shown once a way to tell if the generator or alternator is actually charging is too power lead off of the battery while it is running. If it continues to run, the generator or alternator is charging. If it quits, the battery is supplying the power for spark.

It may be worth a try unless someone else more experienced can come up with something.

Cheers!

Sid

thanks for reply sid, but battery is holding charge. could it possibly be internal corrosion of battery cables?

Yes, battery cables can corrode internally and will not show any signs of being bad. The big thing to keep in mind when experiencing problems such as yours is "clean, bright, and tight" for ALL the wiring connections. I know you said that the battery is holding a charge but just for the fun of it go ahead and put a battery charger on it for a couple of hours. You might be surprised.

all is clean, bright and tight and i have put battery on charger a few hours a few times. i get juice to the starter and starter is really struggling with a loud tap, like it is engaging with flywheel. it just won't crank engine. should i be able to turn the flywheel or shaft in front loader pump/pulley manually with tranny in neutral? i ave not been able to. i have pulled tractor in gear and out of gear, wiyh my truck, hoping to dislodge something, to no avail. i thought the days of only spark and fuel were so simple. ha!!!

If the motor doesn't budge when you rock it by hand in gear, your starter is probably hung up in the ring gear. Happens to my 300U once or twice a year. Loosen the three bolt holding the starter, wiggle it a bit, then tighten it again, see if it fixes it. That one danged bolt is harder than heck to get at, though. I think it's there to teach patience...

thanx for the tip fred. this idea is new to me. do you mean the ring gear is on the starter? i have taken the starter off 5 times, including the one to have it rebuilt. if i pulled the starter off, shouldn't i be able to rotate the engine?

Ring gear is on the flywheel. With years of wear on the gear teeth, sometimes when the starter engages it jams and you can't budge the engine either direction. With the starter off, you should be able to turn the engine fairly easily. The way I check is put the tractor in road gear with brakes off and rock it back and forth. If the fan moves, the starter isn't jammed, if the fan doesn't move, it's time to learn patience with that danged bolt.

You said you had the carb rebuilt. I had the needle stick on my Farmall"s carb and fill the engine with gas and I thought the starter was hung up. I pulled the spark plugs and tried the starter, gas flew out the holes ended up putting the old needle and seat back in the carb. Matt
