Cold blooded IH H

My '39 H is very cold starting and in fact wouldn't start yesterday (about 20 degrees fahrenheit). It seems like it is starved for fuel when I turn it over - will start but then chokes within a few seconds and won't start again. I've adjusted the fuel setting as instructed in a previous posting (about 2.75 turns open from fully closed). It seems as if using the choke helps but it still shuts down shortly after started. My dad had an H that wasn't cold blooded at all - always started in cold weather. Any suggestions ??

I think you answered your problem,it sounds like your starving for gas, a quik test is to turn on tank valve and then hold a container under carb.open drain valve at bottom of bowl, if it dosn't flow well after at least a bowl full clean tank and carb. inlet screens, should run steady. Set needles as others posted. Idle screw does indeed enrichen by turning in.Also some times float needle sticks, tap on carb. with screwdriver handle, see if that changes, flow if so fix carb.Farmalls are good starters in sub.zero Mn., especially 12 volt conversions. guys this is getting long.

Barry -

Properly tuned, the H is an outstanding cold weather tractor. Sounds like the carb on yours is not set right. A couple things to try:

1 - Open the up high speed screw more. Mine runs best right around 4 turns open.

2 - Adjust the idle screw for a richer mixture. The adjustment on mine works "backward" from the high speed screw - you need turn it IN (clockwise) to make it more rich.

Also suggest you pull off the air inlet tube and look at the choke plate. With the choke rod all the way out the choke plate must be shut tight in the carb throat. If it doesn't shut completely, of if it's bent, cold starting will difficult at best.

Finally make sure there are no air leaks between the carb and manifold, and between the inlet manifold and the head. Even a small vacuum leak will affect the carb adjustment and make for hard starting.

Excuse my ignorance, Bob - which screw is the idle adjustment screw. The only adjustment I've made is to the screw directly beneath the carb - I'm not sure which one is the idle screw. Thanks

Barry the bottom one is the high speed. Turn it out counter clockwise another full turn.

the idle is on the left side of the carb on the upper half of the carb. Turn the screw in clockwise to close it, then open it out 1 1/2 turns counterclockwise.

If this doesn't help, I suspect you will need to clean and rebuild the carb. High speed jet might be plugged.
