Engine / engine block cleaning

Hey Guys...

I have the head off my Cub engine and the pistons out. The engine block is still on the tractor right now and I still need to break the glaze off the cylinders as well as remove the valves and clean them up as well as lap the valves.

All this, combined with a less than sanitary garage leads me to think I need to go ahead and remove the engine for a more thorough cleaning before re-assembly.

Do you guys recommend completely dissassembling the engine even if most of the components are within the wear specs and don't need replacement??

Any suggestions about how to get this thing back together and runing with a minimum of fuss...

most engine builders use Tide powder laundry soap prior to reassembly.the cleaner you get it the longer it will last.

If you have it down that far its always a good idea to do it all. Believe me if you don't something will end up kicking you in the A$$ later. At least thats one that is small enough to almost be able to put the rear end on blocks and just grab hold of the engine and pull it out with your hands. Did a cub last summer and had it all over the shop. When it rolled back out it looked brand new.

I agree with Rusty and Old. You need to take a look at the oil pump too. It's on the flywheel end of the engine. Hal

I agree, no better time than right now to pull the block out and take it to a machine shop for a good hot tanking. Should remove all doubt about the water and oil passages being plugged, which could really bite you later.

And don't forget about all the junk you knock loose when you are doing all the other things and most of that junk ends up in the water passages etc.
