Finally, after 9 months of weekend work, I've got the H rebuilt and restored...except for a rich running carb at idle and low speeds. I'm pretty sure it was too rich before the carb rebuild and still is now. The bowl floats okay, but it does have a slight collapsed place on the side. The fuel valve seats fine without any drip at all. She starts immediately. The idle jet doesn't seem to lean the mixture at all, at any number of turns between one out or almost falling out. What should I try?

My 140 carb drove me nuts. I rebuilt it 5 times. Even squirted cleaner through the passage at the bottom that leads to the jet coming up at an angle. My buddy had the same problem and tipped me off. I had to remove the jet assembly totally, and really clean the gunk out of the very bottom of the carb (passage to the jet).

I have done many car carbs and was never fooled like this. I mean, the cleaner would squirt through and hit the ceiling! But is was not clean enough, or quickly replugged. Ran rough and the idle screw had no effect.

A REAL thorough cleaning of the bottom of the carb and she runs fine. Makes a bit of sense when you consider how long these tractors sit sometimes.

If the H carb is similar to the 140 (I think so), you might take one more look.

Okay I'll try it again, hopefully once more instead of five. It was soaked in acetone for 4 hours then blown out with a 100 psi blast. Maybe carb cleaner is will be more effective.

Just to clarify, ALL of the brass parts were removed from the bottom of my carb for the successful cleaning. The jet at the very bottom trapped gunk but allowed sprays to flow through. I removed the jet and half dug, half carb cleaner sprayed out the very bottom hidden passage.

If you completely disassembled the bottom before your soak and squirt, you might have it cleaned, but if the jets were still in place it is worth trying to remove them. Worked for me and my buddy anyway (he had more like a dozen total rebuilds, including an inspection at an IH dealer!)

Good luck.
