I am purchasing a farmall 400 with the wide front end. the owner says that there is a problem with the clutch and it won"t disengage. The tractor runs very good no smoke and sounds good but I am a little concerned with the clutch.
I took the inspection plate off and looked at the clutch and throw out bearing but I don"t see any metal shaving are loose parts, the throw out lever seems to be working ok and i even adjusted alittle bit to be sure. can someone give me an idea if this sounds like the clutch are something more drastic?
Thanks Bryan

thanks for the info bob. The other thing with this clutch is that he said he was usihg the tractor and then the clutch would not disengage, when he went to stop it would not work. I do not know how much he used the tractor before this happened.

Bryan - If the clutch internals look/work OK and the tractor has been sitting idle a while, most likely rust has caused the clutch disk to stick to the flywheel/pressure plate. Freeing it up is not a big deal:

First make sure the pedal is properly adjusted - about 1" of free at the pedal before the throwout makes contact.

Now start the tractor in gear (4th is best), get it running at about 2/3 throttle, then stand hard on the brakes with the clutch depressed. (For safety do this where you have plenty of open space and no traffic!)

As the engine lugs down clutch should break free.

If the clutch does not release (when the described method is used) there are probably two real possibilities. 1} the pilot bearing in the middle of the flywheel on the engine side is siezed, driving the clutch shaft without bothering with the clutch. 1} the driven disk is comming apart and wedging parts into the assembly. Either requires taking apart the clutch. If it has a TA (probable) and it doesnot work, now is the time to repair it.
Lots of luck,
Jim Nicholson
