I have a farmall a. When I first bought it 9 years a go, I went to check the oil and no oil from the service pitcocks. Went and got some oil. When I got back to the tractor, this long gray blob of of oil was hanging from the lower pitcock. Pulled off pan and it was full also full. Is this water in the oil or possibly lead from the years of leaded gas.

A owner: I'm betting condensation is your problem. How much do you use the tractor? I used my Super A and 130 commercially up until 4 years ago. Now they just do my yard work. Condensation is much worse now than when they were worked everyday. Regular oil changes are a must, whether you work them hard or not.

OK.....I have to ask!!!! Is this a 9-year old question? You added the oil 9 years ago? How has the tractor been used since, and how is it running? Or did you just check the oil after having it 9 years? Seems to me that enough time has past that if it was a problem you would know by now. Or maybe I"m just wanting to know too much.....

That engine has wet sleeves and has seals installed in the engine block to prevent coolant leakage. These seals have been known to leak.
This is do to the age of the seals. I would watch for any leakage from those seals
since you have oil pan removed.

I would inspect that oil pump screen for any of that sludge too. Hal

There is a good possibility that there is lead in the pan. If the tractor had sat alot since the seventys when they still had lead in the gas. Could be that they ran a high parrafin wax based oil in the tractor. It could also be water from a cracked sleeve or block. I have pulled off oil pans and there was only room for the rods and crank to turn and the rest of the pan was full of the gray gunk. Wear gloves when removing the sludge.

Sounds like plain old sludge to me.

I bought the tractor 9 years ago. The guy I bought it from had it for two weeks and it had sat for eight years before he got it. He owed me money and I said if he could get it running I would take it and forgive his $175 debt. I have started once after I got it and it is in the same conditon. Coverd in my barn. This tractor still has the little gas tank mounted on the side from when it ran on kero or distillate. Have bought new tires, plugs, points, wires, starter, carb kit but I have not started putting the pieces together.
