Help!!! Trying to replace timing gear cover gasket, but have to get crankshaft pulley off first. The shop manual says that there is a pressure ring that must be removed????? Is that in the center of the pulley??? and if so, what do I use to remove it???? This is my only tractor and it is killing me to have it down, so your help is invaluable!!!! Thanks!

Hi Beth, How's the damper removal progressing on your tractor. I'm going to write down what Bernard suggested. Let me know if I should include anything else. Hal

Hi Beth, I read the I&T shop manual for 684 D239 Diesel engine same as your 674. It was about as clear as mud. Then I read the section for 656D that uses a D310 Diesel engine which is basically the same as your 674 D239 but is the 6 cylinder version. It talks about wedge rings and now this all makes sense. Wedge rings are two rings that are tapered with a split in them. The outer ring fits over the taper on the inner ring and the more they are pulled together the more the inner ring compresses and the outer ring expands. They are often used in concrete anchor bolts.

Now to remove the crankcase pulley:
1)Before loosening the cap screws, mark the pulley with the location of the timing pionter. This is to locate the pulley properly when re-installing.
2)Loosen and remove 3 caps screws, flat washers and pressure ring from crankshaft.
3)With PLASTIC HAMMER tap crankshaft pulley towards block to loosen the wedge rings.
4)Slide pulley and wedge rings off the crank shaft.

Hope this helps

It was thick as mud here... or maybe just it's me that's thick! I am at step 2 in the process, but your information is most helpful. It is starting to somewhat make sense to me now! Thanks so much for taking your time to check this out for me JB2! My day is looking brighter!!! Thanks again,
Beth

Talk to your Case/IH service manager, he will tell you the procedure or he will ask one of his mechanics. If you have a problem call 1-800-732-0017 and ask for farm equipment service. They're in PA, I think you can still reach them and they're very helpful. Be sure to ask about reinstalling those rings, that may be a bigger problem than removing them. Hal from MD

Thanks for the number... it's always good to have a backup resource. It doesn't appear that any part of this process is going to be a walk in the park! Thanks for your help.

Hi Beth, on the 239 engine, it have one taper ring, not the same then a 268 engine: that have many thin ring. Remove the bolts, large washer and the taper ring, with a pry bar remove the pulley. It have a dowel pin to time the pulley. Remove the water pump, it have a bolt under. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada
