Hi just wondering if this is the right genator on my farmall h.There is no tag on it ,i think it 6 volt that what there is for a battery in it.Number on it are 1101355 e87 12 20 68 and i think this is a date. There is a red box on top of gen with three screw terminals on it ,terminal on the back goes to kill swith, other two go to each posts on gen. There is a 4 inch pulley on it,three prong brushes.Ok i have anthor one and do not know what it came off of will this work on there ok.Its a delco-reny number is 1101355 8h1 no box on top but holes for it ,but the pulley is 3 1\4 size. Now how do i test this and see if it works, do i need that box on top to do this or take in and have it tested? Can i but it on and electric motor to test it? thanks serial number on tractor is fbh 332143 x1 thanks

Baler, from your description, that "box" sounds like a 3 wire Voltage Regulator. On those the VR's FLD terminal connects to the Gens Field post,,,,, ,the VR's GEN (or ARM) terminal connects to the Gens Armature post,,,,, ,,,and the other terminal is BAT and it usually wires to the ammeters load terminal or an electrically equivalent location. If it were a 2 wire cutout relay it would have but 2 terminals, one labeled BAT up to the ammeter and the other labeled GEN (or ARM) which wires to the Gens Armature post. On those, the Gens Field post is wired up to the light switch.

To "motor test" a Generator, first dead ground its Field post to the case/frame,,,,, ,make sure the Gen is well grounded and have the belt removed,,,,, ,then apply hot battery voltage to the Gens Armature post..... ... If it spins well as it should, that usually means the armature and brushes are in decent shape and then when you unground the Field it should speed up which usually means the Field windings are okay.

If it passes BOTH tests above it usually will charge.

You have to have a good working Voltage Regulator the correct voltage for the tractor or else a correct voltage 2 wire cutout relay on systems that use the light switch type of Field control. On those the Gens Field post wires up to the light switch where it gets its ground.

Parts book indicates that 1101355 is a generator that uses a voltage regulator mounted elsewhere on the tractor, not a cutout relay mounted directly on the generator as one of yours is--sometimes the parts manual is not 100% correct. If it was mine I would take it to an electrical shop that is familiar with generators -- I have one, you may not. Your chassis serial is early 1950 (March or so), theoretically IH changed the H to voltage regulation in April 1949, According to Guy Fay's Letter Series book, this question was asked a few days ago.
