On a positive ground system, would the load be considered pos. or neg at the ammeter? Alao, must the ammeter be grounded?

Alan, Im not sure if I understand your question correctly, sorry. Im not sure if you mean the ammeter + and - labels or you mean electrical loads like lights n ignition etc.

On a Pos ground tractor, the Ammeters Supply side terminal would be labeled - and its what is battery fed from the batterys - terminal usually from the starter post. (Usually only one wire there) Its Load side terminal labeled + is what supplies loads like lights n Ignition etc usually by a wire from there to the BAT input terminal on switches PLUSSSSS SS it wires to the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay.

If its wired in reverse it will simply register bass ackwards.

That any help????? ?

John, That's exactly what I wanted to hear but didn't know how to ask the question. The Ammeter has a + and a -, but all the posts talk of supply and load. Therefore, my confusion. At least now I know that the meter is wired correctly, I can move on to the rest of the problem which is why I get discharge when I start the tractor.

the load would be on the neg, post. do not ground the ammeter terminals, the base,or guage body can be mounted in a metal bracket.
