806 reverse gear...hit and miss

My '64 806 has reportedly spent a good deal of its 8500 hour life clearing brush with a dozer blade, and that's what I'm doing with it as well. Like loader work, this takes a lot of clutching and gear shifting compared to tillage work and I've noticed a problem when engaging reverse that I need some feedback on.

Not always, but a good 30% of the time the tranny won't drop into reverse. The shift lever is sloppy, but from what I can tell it's moving full travel and doing its job even down on top of the tranny. When the problem occurs the tranny grinds when the clutch is engaged and will eventually slow down and drop into gear if you push the clutch back in a little. I haven't found any combination of double-clutching in neutral, waiting forever before releasing the clutch pedal, changing rpm, or anything else that affects when the problem happens. It seems like a synchro problem, but the fact that it doesn't happen all the time has me confused a bit. None of the forward gears have a problem, even when going from reverse to forward.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Like KB says , the shifter rod from the cam down to the rev. shift fork has a small key and it is woren and any slop there is the start of it all then the cam and shifter the key is on it's last legs and the pin is sheered and maybe a roller is gone or both of them then there is ware in the headed pins and the littel as i call them the cubcadet tierod end are wore and also the bushing in the shift lever it has sideways movement and this all adds up to no rev. It's not that big of a deal to fix as i have fixed many also the range trans cover is also wore and i rebush them rather then replace them i have a machine shop bore out the hole and this must be kept center in the hole or you will realy screw things up and they make a bushing and press it in and instal a new shifter and key and pin and o/ring and what ever else and when done correctly they are like new.

Definetly sounds like it's in the beginning stage of having some worn out parts in the linkage. You don't want any slop in the lever. Best way to fix these is to start under the range transmission cover and work your way back up to the lever, replacing anything that is worn or sloppy. The short term fix is trying to adjust the linkage a little, but then you might end up with it not shifting all the way into high range instead of not shifting all the way into reverse. By the way, these transmissions have no syncro's, the speed trans (1-2-3-4) is a simple sliding gear arrangement, the range trans is a collar-shift setup.

Thanks guys, sounds like a little effort but at least nobody used those bad words "split the tractor" which is what I was worried about.
