My neighbor who is 90 has a IH Cub tracotr Model F-Cub, and when we tried to check the coolant in the radiator there was a lot of old dirty oil on top of the antifreeze. I flushed the system until it appeared to be clean and added new antifreeze and started the tactor up and when it go warm the oil was back in the radiator. There does not appear to be any signs of coolant in the crankcase and the oil level has stayed the same. Is it possible that the hydralic/transmission system can be leaking into the cooling system? I'm not familiar with the way this system works!

Thanks to all who replied to my message. I added a 50/50 mix. I will try to flush again and see what happens then.

is there a possibility someone may have put water pump lubricant in ti, not realizing it didn't have a water pump?

My guess would be that the flush didn't do its job well enough. Bet you used one of those auto parts store flushes didn't you. Well if you did guess what, they don't work very well. To do a good job of flushing the system drain it, fill with vinagar and run it about an hour then let cool and drain. Then back flush the system by makeing an adaptor that fits in the block drain and hook it up to a garden hose and let it flow out the rad cap area for about and hour or 2. The oil is probably years of build up and probably isn't any thing to worry about.

Was this a 50/50 mix on the antifreeze that you put in the radiator? Hal

Not likely to be from anywhere but the engine. The hydraulic system can backfeed into the crankcase if the seals in the pump are bad but there is no other pathway from the touch control system or differential / transmission. So either you didn't get it all flushed out or it is coming from the engine.

Bob:

First off, the Cub utilizes a Thermo-Siphon type system - non pressurized. I am not sufficiently proficient to expouse on this, but if you check the Cub Manual Server at www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html, there is tons of info on Cubs....
