What are the pros / cons of the standard trans v the syncro trans on these tractors ?

The con to the synchro trans is that there is no such thing. The pro to the "crash" gearbox is that it actually exists, and is what each and every 706 came with.

There was only one transmission. It was a four-speed sliding gear with a high/low/reverse collar shift behind it, for a total of 8 forward/4 reverse. Most have the optional TA up front, which gives you two powershift speeds in each gear, for a total of 16 forward/8 reverse speeds. Big IH's didn't have a syncro transmission until the 5088 series came out in '81 or '82.
