Bad Fuel Shut-off Valve on an M

The fuel shut-off valve on my fuel strainer is bad—it lets gas go down the fuel line even when it’s in the fully closed position.

I’ve heard this can be bad, considering the fact that it could flood-out the carburetor.

I thought about replacing the fuel strainer, but I hesitate to try to unscrew it out of the fuel tank. It’s been there for more than 50 years, so I’m afraid that if I start twisting on it, it’s going to screw up the metal of the gas tank. Anyone have any experience in getting these off? Do they come off easy?

I thought an easier fix would be to put a new shut-off valve in the gas line. Anyone have any experience with this? Anyone have a good source of a valve that I could put in there? I was thinking about putting it right between the fuel strainer and the line. Are they standard AN-type fittings there?

Oh yeah, forgot something,

I'f I do put in a new fuel strainer assmebly, do I need to put any sort of sealant on the threads before I screw it back into the gas tank?

YOU PROBABLY WON,T HAVE ANY TROUBLE REMOVING THE OLD FUEL BOWL. I USUALLY TURN MINE FOWARD JUST A LITTLE BEFORE BACKING IT OUT. SEEMS TO SORT OF BREAK THE SEAL. EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE OLD BOWL WITH A NEW ONE, I ALSO ADD A QUARTER TURN VALVE BETWEEN THE BOWL AND CARB. THEY,RE FAIRLY CHEAP AND MAKES IT SO MUCH HANDIER SHUTING THE GAS OFF.

I HAD BEEN GETTING THEM AT A HYDRAULIC SHOP THAT MAKES HOSES AND ALSO SELLS FITTINGS. THE ONES I GOT THERE WERE STAINLESS STEEL AND RAN AROUND $10.00, BUT THERE IS A NEW SHOP THAT OPENED UP CLOSER TO ME AND THE LAST ONE I GOT THERE WAS A SMALL BRASS VALVE. IT WORKS JUST AS WELL AS THE OTHER ONE AND ONLY COST $4.00. IT IS POSSIABLE THAT LOWES WILL EVEN HAVE IT, OR EVEN YOUR LOCAL HARDWARE. GOOD LUCK.

I've replaced the complete assembly on all of my tractors. Never had a problem getting the old one out, and at least two of my tractors were 60 + years old. The best deal I have found on new units is from my Case-IH dealer, right around $20. and a dead ringer for the original.

I've never had any problems with them. There made of a softer metal then what the tank is made of so if they mess up the tank is still good. I put one on an H this summer and it had been parked for more the 25 years. came right out with just a little hard pull or 2
