Slipping road gear in MD...

Neighbor just brought home an old M diesel...got a helluva good deal on it. Only problem seems to be that it slips out of high (road) gear. Whatdoya suppose we got here, missing teeth, worn bad or ???? I told him you guys would have a couple good answers, so please come thru! And Happy New RED Millenium!

So whats new? I thought they were supposed to do that. All 3 of my M's do it. I think its tooth wear. I just live with it, always ready to put her back in gear.

Baggsy,
Probably just a bent shift fork and the gears aren't meshing fully. If the fork is bent it can be straightened or replaced (straightening's easier). If the fork isn't bent then the gears are worn and will have to be replaced or just don't use road gear (that's the easiest and cheapest fix of all).

Could also be problems with the detent ball or spring that holds the 4/5 fork in place.
