I am looking at a Farmall 1206 Turbo that will be for sale at an auction this weekend, I was wondering if they were a good tractor for some medium to heavy field work, its in relatively good condition, one owner tractor, it has a loader on it currently but I was planning to sell that if I pick it up, The rear rubber isnt very good but the front is fair, its never had an overhaul, it has about 4000 ours on it, no duals with it but we have some to fit, it has the early International Cab on it,smokes a little but not real bad, seems to run real smooth. I believe its about a 1966. I just wondered if it was worth bidding on and how much one of you guys would pay for a tractor in this condition at a sale, just to get an idea when it comes time for the auction. Thanks.

Adam, there is a 1206 here in central MN at a dealer. They havebeen asking $5900, well its been there for about a year, with cab, duals 5000 hours, ran good, sheet metal kinda rough. I was dealing on it but they wouldnt sell it for the $3000 I was willing to give. If you didnt know the turbo is no added on item on a 1206, they came new with them, I beleeve the motor is the same as an 806, just with a turbo. They are tough as nails from what i have read on this forum. Some say the best tractor ever built by IH. If it goes for under $4000 it think you would be doing ok.

The engine is different than the one found in an 806. It was beefed up for turbo duty.

Main things I remember are 7 main bearings in the 1206 and piston sprayers to deal with the added heat from forced induction.

I believe the 806 had 5 mains and no piston sprayers. Don't quote me, it's been a couple years since I read the book, but I do know they were beefed up...

When they were new, they were great. They"re 40 years old now, and condition will vary from tractor to tractor. Just depends on how well it was cared for. An 06 series with a loader is going to need the shift linkage rebuilt right away. Hour counter is the last thing to look at. 4000 hours works out to 100 hours a year. Would you buy a brand-new 110 horsepower tractor and only use it 100 hours a year? Probably 14000. Wouldn"t give more than 5000 for it.

Even at 14,000 hours that still only comes out to 350 hours a year, or three hours a week, 24,000 is still only 600 hours a year.

Do some foot work before attending the aution, see when it was last overhauled, how long they have owned it, what kind of loader work it's done. The 1206 is a good tractor, but many were abused by having the power turned up to 140-150 hp, the transmissions had probems in this range.

It sold in the $9000.00 range new. Don't get into the bidding until you see where they're going. Then decide whether it's too high.

You could call a Case/IH dealer in another town &
see what the 1206 would cost if they have one. Hal

That tractor has probably never been overhauled. You want to talk about an engine that will run forever, that's it. I wouldn't go over $5500 on it though, although there seems to be more and more collector interest in those 12s all the time. I would think anything about $6500 is just plain too high. The cab should hurt the sale of it. Check the front end and see if it is shot. Steering arms welded to spindles. If so, drop down to $4500 or so. That's about what it would cost to rebuild it. If it looks like it has been absued, don't go over the $4500 mark regardless. Don't remember what you said you were going to do with it, but it should last you a long time, even if it uses a little oil. They will burn oil for a long time, and even at higher oil prices, you would have to dump a lot in over the years to equal an overhaul. Personally, we have always wanted a 1456, but one could make the arguement the 1206 was as good of a tractor as IH ever made.
