I just bought 1947 Super A. the governor is completely gone -- tore it down and found it full of rusty goop. Needs all the internal parts new. Where can I get the whole governor assembly? bjk

There are several large online sellers of tractor parts that I can't list because their mention is blocked by this site. You can do a Google search. Also, I bought one off Ebay that was in good condition. I saw one for sale at Walt's site for $168.

If I can"t find the complete governor assembly then I guess I"ll need to rebuild this one. Never done that before -- have the Shop manual but it"s not a lot of help in explaining what to do. Anyone out there ever done this?

Yep, I've redone a couple of them. The first thing to do is dissassemble and evaluate (measure with a mic) the damage. The worst part is re-bushing the bores in the case, best to take it to a machine shop for that unless you are so inclined and posess the necessary precision gear to do it sucessfully. Make sure the shafts are good (not worn to badly) otherwise they will wear new bushings out before their time. I have alot of take it off machines in my shop but not one put it back on machine. It just takes time and patience. That black goop is probably sludge built up over the years. Use grease on reassembly until oil makes it there from the pump. Dont forget the thrust washers, should probably be replaced if its as bad as you say. Hope this helps some. This site sells some parts.

Thanks guys. That helps some. I'll clean it up but I know all the parts are worn bad and some even missing. This SA has had a lot of "quick-fix" hands on it over the years so eventually I'll have to go over everything. Right now I'm just trying to get it running good. The engine sounds good, no smoke. But the gov doesn't work at all and the steering gear needs to be rebuilt. Eventually I hope to fully restore it to original specs.

I'm new at this, just retired. so I'll probably be asking for lots of advice. Thaks again.
