I was just cleaning up the gasket surfaces on my M head when I spotted a crack. It is off of the oval shaped coolant port and goes for about an inch up in between the third and fourth combustion chamber on the head gasket surface of the head. Any input on this would be great. Is it something that needs to be repaired or replaced? Also kinda looks like one starting off of the front oval between one and two. Or should I throw a gasket in and see what happens? The reason I removed head was for a stuck valve, as I bought the tractor not running, and had been sitting for several years. Thanx.
Dan

I replaced the headgasket on my 400 because I was finding coolant in the oil. That did not fix it though. I put Stop Leak in it and it fixed it. I got lucky. It looked like the no.4 cylinder liner may have been installed in a rough and tough manner.

I'm with Cowman. I did a Jeep for my son and when I took the head in for work they told me it had a tiny crack..machinist asked what I was doing with the head..if it was for a customer replace it as you didn't want problems down the road..if it was for me..it would likely be alright....that was 6 years ago and we still have the Jeep.."Larry" (Laredo)..... .....Mike in Exeter Ontario

actually, it goes right down the center where the gasket would seal between the third and forth cumbustion chamber.
