ok let me re-word this. we are looking for a small tractor big enough to move round bales that has a loader. we know all to well of the dangers of moving bales with a loader. so we are just looking for a small tractor that has enough ground clearance to move round bales. and that you can find a good loader to fit without much stress. sorry for the miss-communication. and any recommendations would be great.

I just added a 560 diesel with an F-11 Farmhand loader to our fine green line. (I think dad"s going to cut me out of the will, oh well!) It came with an 8 foot bucket and grapple fork and I picked it up at auction for only $3,000. It works great for feeding round bales and silage. I also use it for snow removal. My only complaint is it"s a little light on the rear tires, I need to add some weight.

Ashley I have a 52 super M with an F-11 farmhand loader that I use to load unload stack and feed my round bales. It has 3 spears set in a quick change homemade head. it will take up to 7 spears. My round bales weigh in at 2000 lb average. I have 600 pounds of wheel weights and I also have a six foot grader blade hanging on the 3-point. Oops almost forgot my big girls got a wide frontend, no power steering. Works just fine. Tallperson

After reading your post the seconded time I think you plan on using a rear bale mover. If that is the case most IH or JD utility models will be OK. I,m talking about the 40 to 75 HP range. Just make sure the 3 Pt has enough lift for a bale and you should be fine. Hope this helps.

How much will you use it and how much do you want to spend? If you plan on using it alot and can afford it I would look for an MFD tractor. Last summer we bought a CIH 5140 with mfd and a loader for right at $20,000 which isn't that much more than you would pay for an older 2wd tractor with a loader. Our former loader tractor was an IH 826 and for loader work the 5140 is twice as much tractor, the MFD alone makes a huge difference in what you can do with the loader.

Cliff: make sure to check front end bearings as mine failed at 1800 hours. $4000 CDN later and the wheels turned. Checked at next 1000 hours, and replaced every 12 to 1500 after that. Never had a problem with the 85 series or the White (FIATS) before, however. This seems to be a common maintenance item as many dealers stock all requiredparts.

Are you talking about the hub bearings in the planataries? My 5230 with loader has 3000 hrs on it and never has had the front wheel hubs off. I change the hub and differental oil every 500 hours and I haven't noticed any play in the hubs. I use the loader for moving and feeding large round bales so it always has a lot of weight on it.

MN Scott: A 1996 build 5220 with a CIH 520 loader with a CIH 8 foot materials bucket and a bale fork for two 4X4 round bales of dry hay; unit purchased new. The bearings in the planetary failed taking almost all associated parts with it. These never leaked and had recommended service. The bearings might have been able to support the static load weight, but sure as sh-- failed under rolling movement. The newer MX line had bigger bearings..... Nothing like an improvement... QR

Forgot to add that last week at the local independent repair shop, there were two JDs with similar hours and the same repair. One was a 6000 series and one a 7000 series. Upon questioning the garage owner, he sees these problems but not with a specfic brand, hours, or any pattern as to why the failure. He was suggesting that the bearing manufactureers job out certain sizes and quality control appears to be lacking. This is not much comfort when they fail. I had my tractor repaired at my local CIH, where all my offfarm repairs are done. QR

If your not stacking the bales a 3pt mover on a smaller tractor is easier on the tractor. That way you still have the bucket to use and it is also counter weight. Even with large tractors it is safer. I use a IH 1086 with loader to move bales but when hauling only one it is always on the 3pt mover. Just my thoughts.

Myself i would not want to go smaller the a 574 584 if i was to go with a utility i prefer a much larger frame tractor with more weight in the rear to start with like a 706 756 and yea i know that alot of guys do not like Cal in the rear tires but if that tractor is not going to be used for a road tractor and only field work fluid in the rears along with rear weights of atleast 3 sets if not more on the wheels then you have something that is a more stable platform to work with .
