#24 corn picker mounted oh farmall H

OK guys. I have been looking to buy and have found a McCormick Deering # 24 2 row corn picker. I have a Farmall H that i want to mount it on. Ive read some of the archives in the forum and have read the pros and cons about this combination. Im NOT wanting to use this set up in the field. I want it for SHOW PURPOSES. Im just wanting any and all info on this setup as far as what it takes to mount the picker. I read somewhere that you have to have some kinda special spindles for mounting tha front nose cone on tha tractor. ?? Anyone know about this? Also none of my tractor have hydrolic on them. Did this model picker use hydros to raise it up and down?? Or were there just levers? Im unfamilar with this so please, any info would be apprecaited. Aslo i"ve heard this is a pretty rare combo and i thought it would be a nice and unusual prarade item. Any idea what this combo would bring at a sale if it was all restored? THANKS ALOT FOR ANY INFO!!!

have a good working 234 picker with sheller attach. really hate what i.m being told ab it only worth scrap ..it deserves a better life than that ..has served the farm well..we mounted iot on a 686 ..but don.t feed out cattle any more so don"t need the ear corn

My dad picked corn with a #24 picker for years in So Dak. We lived near the Missouri river and the wild ducks loved him. That thing shelled a lot of the corn off the ear and like others said, it picked clean in the morning and more husks in the drier afternoon. We had it mounted on a Super H. We always left the spindles on the front wheels which caused a problem with the outside bearings needing more grease which we didn't alway do enough of. There were some interesting mechanisms as to how the corn picker was lifted up and how the middle nose cone lifted with the picker. The picker was driven by the belt pulley with a roller chain adapter mounted on it. It was like all the mounted corn pickers of those days, impossible to operate in a wet field. The front wheels would ball up and you just couldn't go. Then in the fall the mud would freeze at night and you really had problems. My dad would never let us kids run the corn picker as he was afraid we would loose some body parts with all the dangerous in running rollers and such. We always had to haul the corn. He would let us run the combine, but not the corn picker. Roger

For what it's worth, the last ear corn picker that my dad owned was an IH 234, it was amazing to me the number of different parts on that 234 that were obviously built using the same blue prints as the #24 used. The engineers just scaled those parts up so they were bigger and stronger.

I had a 24 mounted on a M used it for 2 or 3 years was a good picker if the corn was not dry.Usually you could pick in the morning as long as there was some dew on the stalks. With no husking bed the ears got pretty dirty by afternoon. Yes you will need hyd, to raise and lower the front snouts.Should work good on a H.

Rust farmall; I understand,lol. NO NO i wouldn't want you to tear a good manual up just for that. I've found a couple of manuals on ebay so maybe i can have a winning bid on em.

Nebraska Cowman; I might be getting in touch with you for real. As i said, i havent went and looked that tha picker i found yet. Tha guy said everything was there, but i was unaware of any hub attachments at tha time. he still has tha farmall h that tha picker came off of but another guy is looking to buy it. So i dont know if i can make up some kind of a trade for tha hubs or not. I hope to go look at it this weekend so be on tha look out for an email if i need anyhthing.

I really wanna do this to one of my Hs so i need all tha help i can get. I like tha tractors that you dont see every day. I have one H on full steel wheels and another H im gonna put dual rear tires wnd wheels on and my 3rd H is tha one i want tha picker on

Yes, a 24 is a good match for an H. I have a parts machine here if you are short pieces. I have the front hub pieces too, realy not part of the hub but a special fitting that threads on the end of the spindle in place of the bearing nut. Shoot I've even got a special pot-metal sediment bowl for the fuel tank and a couple of spark arrestors. Let me know.

Don't know if I would call it a rare set-up or not but since there arn't too many #24 pickers still around maybe it is rare. Thought I had a parts H with those special hubs but that must have been someplace else that I saw them. Shouldn't be too hard to find though. I have an original owners manual for the #24, but I don't have a way to scan it right now, so I guess I ain't much help.

Am I thinking correctly that those hubs are for the front wheel and that the middle snoot mounted to them? I�m trying to remember exactly what my dad told me about some special hubs they had for a corn picker. I�m not sure if the hubs or any part of the picker would be around my yard anymore though�

Might be awhile before I can scan anything. The printer/scanner I did have was one with the flatbed scanner, but it went belly up one day so off to wally world we went. Bought what we thought was the best value for the money, and discovered at home that it will scan single page documents, but no flatbed. I could take the manual apart and scan it that way, but I really don't want to destroy a good manual.

I have seen the H's with those hubs once in awhile. My neighbor had one with those hubs but I don't know if he still has the tractor. We had a 24 picker that I hauled to salvage yard 30 years ago. I only remember running the 2MH. Seems like I had a manual too. I will look.

I found manuals for a 1P picker and a 2M picker but not the 24. Sorry
