Have a 1963 IH 444 that runs at idle but when given gas breaks up. The fuel filter spurts but never obtains a level equal to the dischage side.

Shouldn't the filter fill up?

Mike thanks for your response.

Its a gasser and runs rough when cold but starts rather well however when it warms it begins to miss badly. I noticed that the fuel filter which is clear only gets about 1/8 inch of fuel in it and the barrel is 1 3/4 inches high. Fuel barely reaches the outlet side of the fuel filter.

This is a friends unit and tomorrow we are going to blow the fuel line back to the tank.

It just seems strange that so low a level of fuel is in the filter element.

Any suggestions you may have will be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Bill

Hi Bill, can you give us more information. When you say the tractor breaks up do you meam sputters and stalls? Is it a gasoline model? I'm not sure what you mean by the fuel filter spurts. If it is a diesel I would say that the filter or filters if two in a series should fill up with fuel. There could be a line blockage. I have had one of my diesels die on me and couldn't get a good flow of fuel out of the filter at the bottom so I had to go back from the filter to find the problem..it was in the bottom of the tank. Some filters have a pet cock on the bottom to let off any water in the fuel and there should be a good flow when they are open, but if a diesel definitely they should fill up and run full...Mike in Exeter Ontario
