I'm a Farmall guy--couple SCs and a 230. I'm lookin' at a 350 Utility. Couple questions: Did the Utilities come with TA? Is the PTO live on the the 350? Owner says it needs a "seal" on the steering box. Are these hard to replace? Says is needs a right brake. How hard to fix?? Comes with a plow and harrow (assume this is a disk). Thanks. Bob, Just found your post about the 350U. "Chschafer is right, if it hasn't seen a lot of loader work or been abused, then the steering box is probably OK. Determine how much of the steering play is actually in gearbox. A 1/4 turn in box can usually be fixed. If it has manual steering, there's only two seals in it. One each on the steering shaft arms. Leaks here is easily seen. On a power steering box they can leak at above seals as well as at the seal underneath the steering wheel. All of the above is an easy fix. Both boxes have a welsh plug in the bottom that can leak, which will require removal of gearbox. Could also be a hyd. fitting, line, cylinder on the box. If it has independent pto the actuating handle will be on the right of driver, between hyd, valves and fender. If regular pto the handle will be a small rod behind the seat, between the rockshaft and the chassis. The brakes can usually be fixed by removing and cleaning. Sometimes you will have to replace balls, springs and disks. If, after removing them, the inside of housing shows signs of oil, then the bull pinion seal needs replaced. You may already be familiar with this if you've encountered the same problem on the SC or 130, as the 350 brakes are basically the same except larger. The 300/350's are good tractors for their designed purpose. Great for small farm, easier to get in to tight places or low sheds than a Farmall.

I am a believer in the Utility of a 350U. If it is an external leak, it is not hard to fix. There are difficulties finding steerring parts, but not impossible. I like them and find the tractor high in usefulness.

Bob: I'll give you a bit of advice, once your a Farmall man, utilities just don't cut it. Their steering boxes have never had a great reputation, now most folks are saying it's almost impossible to find utility steering box parts and very expensive when you do.

Now the great part about a utility, on average they've never been used on high hour applications. Since most of the power train is identical to the Farmall, they make great parts tractors.

We've had both the utilities and the farmalls, and I would have to admit that for the most part, I prefer the utilities more than the farmalls for our little work. The utilities just seem more nimble, they can fit pretty much anywhere(especially in short areas), and they seem handier for the little jobs like raking, conditioning, spreading manure, pulling wagons, etc. Now, when it comes to working up or baling, unhook the utility and pull out the Farmall, there is just no comparison there. In the end, I'd buy another utility after the beating our 460 took and survived.

350"s came with a variety of options and configurations. They may have live PTO, PTO that is transmission drive (not live) or no PTO at all. The Torque Amplifier is an option as well. The disc brakes are not hard to repair. The steering box was the weak link on 350U"s especially if they a lot of front end loader usage and abuseage. I don"t know how hard it is to change the seal as mine has power steering and it is working fine. Hope this helps.
