I recently purchased a well used but still in very good condition 400 diesel. It needs tires, some hydralic hoses, and the raditor redone. The gentleman I bought it from was a diesel mechanic, old school one at that, he told me that the primary pump witch delievers fuel to the main pump had some seals blown in it and it was fillin the injection pump houseing up with diesel and then transfering it over into the oil pan. It will even do this when the tractor is not running. What i am wondering can i get those seals or is their someone out their that has made a set of them? I would like to replace those 2 seals before i jerk the pump off and take it some where to have it checked out. Thanks for your time
Brandon

Brandon,

If the pump is working properly and the engine is running nicely, in other words, if the leaking fuel is the only problem, I would sure take a stab at fixing it yourself if you're at all mechanically minded. This is a very common problem on these pumps. If it mostly leaks when sitting, you might even find that shutting off the fuel valve at the tank when you're not using the tractor takes care of the problem.

A pic of the pump would help, but if it is one of the models with the transfer pump on the back you don't even need to remove the pump to change the seal. The transfer pump can be pulled off with the main pump attached. Just my two cents worth - I was quoted rebuild prices from $875 plus core all the way up to $1800. I think the seal is about $27.

I have a pretty good mechanical ability.....i went to school for diesel mechanics and endup operateing heavy equipment for a liveing. I thought if i could find the seals for the primary pump i could at least change them and try that before i pull the whole deal off. Where can you get those seals just wondering. Did you make them or did you find someone or a company that that does. If you can get me some of those seal please do. Either e-mail or let me know on the board here what I need to do to get those seals. I do turn the fuel off when im not useing the tractor. Brandon

Brandon, keep in mind, the front cover on the engine may have to come off like my 450D. There is a hidden bolt inside the cover that helps hold the injector pump on.

Thank for your replies. I guess I will be taking the injection pump off sometime soon to have it sent out and redone. There is a pretty good pump shop around here. I am going to call them and see if they can help me out. Thanks alot, Brandon

If the fuel is also going into the oil pan, then the seal at the front of the main pump needs replaced too, which has to be done when the pump is off of course.

On my 650D I was able to get both the front seal of the main pump as well as the seal for the primary pump from my IH dealer. The later primary pumps used a regular lip seal which is still available. The earlier ones(not sure where the cutoff point is) used a "packing" type of seal which IH doesn't carry anymore. I'd bet a good pump repair place like the others mentioned on this post could fix ya up though.

You can contact Mylex International at 1-800-553-1821 for a rebuild quote or Real Diesel at 1-888-349-9461. Mylex will quote the price over the phone. Hal

I just took the seals out of the pump on my 450. I was told the rear transfer pump seal is very hard to find. I called in my seal dimensions and I have a pair of seals coming direct from CR. Time will tell if they fit. The transer pump is pretty fool proof, but I don't intend to monkey with the injection side. With an output of 60 hp, I don't think it needs tweeking.

I just had my primary pump gone through and also just reset all of the settings inside of the pump. I would recommend taking it somewhere and having it done by a professional unless you have alot of time to spare and the IH diesel pump book. It describes the details needed to fix any IH pump and any piece of equipment.
