Seems like I often find myself with a few quarts of leftover oil. Is there any problem in mixing say 40wt with 10w30. I can't see why there would be a problem but maybe I'm missing something. Thanks

There's no magic involved. The viscosity will be the average of the two oils. If you mix 50/50, cold will be 20W, warm will be 35W. You'll end up with 20W35 :)

In warmer climates and/or summer months, the thicker oil is fine.

I've never felt particularly bad about mixing oil brands of the same viscosity rating but steer away from mixing viscosities even if the same brand. Seems like I've heard something about molecule size and the big ones in 40W getting pretty few and far between if you cut it down with 10W and the like. I would appreciate it if someone who really knows would chime in there.

Bud, the only thing to keep in mind would be that if you mix 10-30 and straight 40 your oil will not thin in cold weather down to the 10 as it should but hold up to heat better than the 30. I have done it several times with no harmful effects that I'm aware of.
