Hi Joe, my brother has had a 454D since 1972 and also has a 495D which is the newer model of the 454D. Re loader, he has an IH 2250 Quick attach loader on the 495 that he uses every day to feed round bales. Now my opion is the 2250 loader is to heavy for the 454/495 front axle. He has broken hub and axle bolts. The tractor hydraulics handle the loader fine. The rear tires are loaded and in the winter he has a set of Trygg spike chains and a 3pt blade on the back. Re starting 454 in cold weather: Starting down to -10F. 1)Good batery, winter Diesel fuel, Stop/Run lever to Start position and crank the engine if it doesn't fire within in 3 or 4 revs give it 1 shot of ether while cranking engine, if still no fire give it 1 more shot of ether while cranking. If it still doesn't start STOP and plug in the block heater. Below -10F use a block or tank heater for about 30 minutes. Re ether, my brother's 454 has over 15,000 Hrs on it and he used to start it almost every day in the winter using the above procedure without problems and we live in eastern Canada were the temparatures go as low as -30F sometimes but not this year. The 495 does not use an ether assist start but has a glow plug in the intake manifold that also heats the Diesel Fuel going to the injection pump. The 495 will start to -20F without being plugged in.
