Has anyone tried the "oil Base" paint sold by places like Farm and Fleet? It comes pre mixed for different tractors and is available in spray cans as well. If so how does it spray? How does it hold up? Does it handle heat? Not the heat of the exhaust manifold but of cooled engine parts?

This H was painted with Quality Farm & Fleet paint. As my air compressor was broke I used spray cans believe it or not. It is oil based and I am very happy with the way it turned out. I only wish I could have used my air sprayer as I could of added hardener and it is only about $17.00 a gallon as opposed to $4.50 a can for spray paint. I got mine on sale for $2.50 @ 17 cans. I used spray primer from Wal-Mart @.99 cents a can, as well as the aluminum for the wheels. I have less than $100.00 in this tractor for paint and decals. I am very pleased and will use there paint for my Cub and Super A this spring. It matches well and one gallon will do both tractors. As opposed to IH 2150 from the dealer at $125.00 a gallon. I am not that picky and if people don't like my paint they don't have to look at my tractor. There other colors also match well, I have saw some pics of a JD A done with their paint and it looks good too. Sorry to ramble on. Just remember a good primer undercoating is as important as your top coat of red. By the way that is only one coat on my tractor and it has been sitting outside since I painted it and still looks that good maybe better since it has cured out. Bill {Antique Acres}

Bill your tractor look sharp. Say your dealer wants $125.00 for a gallon on IH2150? I bought a gallon from our Case/IH place last spring for $31.00. But I ended up not using it because I used PPG DelStar.

I wish your dealer was around here. We have a good dealer on most parts, but on the not everyday stuff that carries a IHC emblem and NAPA can't get it they are awfully proud of it. Bill {Antique Acres}

You don't want my dealer, takes him forever to look up Super A parts, even when I give him a part number. Claims the microfiches are old. I order all my stuff from Bermuda Ken at Carter and Gruenewald. I get the right part evertime and he knows what I need. All my dealer wants to do is sell trucks.

I meant that to say SINCE my local dealer is so bad I get all my stuff from Bermuda Ken. He is great! I didn't like the way that one read.

Bill, I also pay $31.00 per gallon for IH 2150 from my local Case/IH dealer out here on the left coast....think yours needs to look up his cost again or else he's saving up for that trip to Bermuda. I can understand some variation in price but NOT 400% difference.

I've done two Farmalls with Central Tractor's "IH Red" equipment enamel. The stuff is cheap ($17/gal on sale), sprays good, and cures to a nice, glossy finish. It also handles engine heat beyond 200 deg without any problem. It seems to hold up well - 1st tractor was painted 3 years ago and still looks sharp.

Downside is the CT paint takes a LONG time to cure: Tack-free takes 24 hours - plan on 48 hours between coats. Also the cured finish is softer than the OEM paint, though it only is a problem high wear areas like the pedal treads and tranny deck (and it's quickly and easily touched-up). Use of a hardner would probably help.
