Hello,

I need to find a way to add live hyraulics to a farmall H to run a post driver.

What would be the best way to do this?

Pump driven off the front crank pulley?

Find a M&W live pump?

Does anyone have any pictures of their conversion?

IMHO the best way is to get the live pump off a 300 or 350 that goes between the timing gears and the magneto or distributor and build a supply tank to go in the torque tube where the belly pump is. It is also the most expensive. I don’t like the live pumps driven off the front of the crankshaft for safety reasons...

Here is my M converted over, H would be similar.

You need flow to run a post driver. None of the options you posted are going to be satisfactory. The M&W live pump is nearly impossible to find, and completely impossible to find parts for, and only flows something like 3 gallons per minute. Cobbing an old power steering pump to run off the fan belt won't give you any better performance, it'll look like crap, and perform even worse. Even the factory live pump won't give you the flow you need.

You either need a setup like Steve's, or a PTO driven pump. Since you're not going to have to be driving posts while the tractor is moving, having a "live" hydraulic system isn't necessary.

I think a PTO pump and reservoir would work good for just a post driver... at least when we drive them the tractor usually sits in one place long enough a guy can just take it out of gear and let the clutch out to run the pump.

I have the belt drive live hydraulics on my H... not for the faint of heart (or someone without decent fabrication skills) and you need a helpful machine shop too. I can develop around 1000 psi and have about 15 gallons per minute of flow to run my power steering and anything else I might have hooked up.

Hi Steve- I kind of like the way that tractor looks- clean, but in it"s work clothes. It obviously does some work around the place. My stuff tends to look like that, with maybe a touch more paint on them. I thought things never rusted in AZ, or is that back home in ND? For that matter I thought things didn"t rust there either! Here in WI things are always wet, except June through August when you are trying to grow crops! LOL!
Actually, if I want it to rain, I just cut down 50 acres of hay- that usually does it.

Well, things rust everywhere eventually! I don't think that tractor had been inside for the last 20 years or so when I found it. It is in ND.

It's definitaly in it's work clothes. I would paint it, but why? As far as being used, the first year I had it running we put 100 hours on it (our 544 only got 50 hrs that year). Since I've moved away it only gets about 50 hours or so during the summer haying.

I've seen rusty things in AZ as well. Once the sun eats the paint off, the surface rust comes along. Currently snowing right now, about 3 inches on the ground so far... and we only have 300 acres seeded and I fly back to AZ on the 28th. :o(

Bummer about the snow. At least you have 300 acres in. We haven"t gotten started in my part of WI. That"s the problem with trying to farm around other things in your life: you just can"t schedule it. I"ve often thought how much less stressful it would be if I ONLY did my farm work. Then you"d have the time to do what you had to when it was needed. Plus I wouldn"t have to deal with the people that can make life miserable!
That is kind of a neat fabrication for the pump pulley and bracket. I have a big ol" lathe and a mill and I like making stuff like that.

So far about 8 inches of snow and blizzard conditions today. Wouldn't bother me a bit if we didn't have cattle to deal with... it gets old tromping through the slop trying to save calves.

Thanks for the compliments on my set up. It isn't the prettiest, but power steering and live hydraulics are nice to have.

If I were to do it all over again, I would go with a 460 and save myself a bunch of work, and probably some $$ too.

kfox is correct. Some people have added pumps that run off the front pulley. M&W pumps are hard to find, though not impossible. Since the tractor is stopped when you are digging post holes, it seems to me that live hydraulics are not necessary. If you are actually pushing posts into the ground, I don't think your existing pump, or the SH live one has enough power to do that, but I have not tried it. The pulley driven one would depend on the size of the pump.

You can add a live pump of a Super H or 300 but you need to change the front timing cover & plate.
