I have a 51 H and the housing where the thermostat is supposed to be has this wierd spring thing there unstead of a thermostat. Is the thermo supposed to go behind the spring thingy or is the spring thingy some kind of weird thermo?

Question for Bob M. Will that AutoZone #800-180 thermostat work in a model M as well?

Andrew - That "spring thing" is probably the remnants of the original thermostat. Unlike modern automotive t'stats the OEM unit is quite large and complex (and priced accordingly).

Best bet is to dig out that spring (and any other bits of the t'stat probably still stuck in the housing) and install a new t'stat.

Alternative to an OEM t'stat: The Autozone #800-180 thermostat. It looks different but it fits and works fine in an H. And under $5 it's considerably cheaper than the OEM style t'stat!

Not real sure what you are describing but I do know that the original thermostat does not look anything like the thermostat in your car or truck, in fact, it does sort of resemble a spring or bellows.
