A friend has a M that we tried to pull start. It pop and got the mufler red hot. He replaced the points,plugs,and coil. It's a 6-volt system. What can it be?

You need to see if the engine is getting gas. If it is, then you need to check the for fire at your
coil wire. Make sure your battery is fully charged and use a volt meter to check for voltage at the coil with the ignition switch on. Clean and adjust the points to .020" with the points rubbing block on the high point of the cam lobe.
Then pull the coil wire from the cap and hold within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground while someone attempts to start the tractor with the ignition switch on. Should have hot spark while cranking.

If it does have good fire reconnect coil wire and then see if tractor will start. Hal

Timming WAY OFF or ya got the carb weened back way to far , on the back side of the carb there is a screw on the back side of the fuel bowl turn it in till it just touches the seat then back off 4 to 4 1/2 turns next check the timming at full throttel and here it dependes on what dist curve kit it has in it it could be as high as 40 degrees before or only 27-28 degrees. So i gave ya what i know so your on your owen now.
