After my grandfather past away, my father was givin his 49 M farmall, i now have his 48 C and H aswell. I am very intrested in restoreing these tractor but dont really know a lot about them. I have a couple shop books on them i have read and am learing alot just by working hands on. I was wondering if anyone would be intrested in allowing me to e-mail you questions i have, and picturs of things that I am not sure about. I just got the M running yesterday and am very excited but i notice when i drove it to see if the gears were in working order, ther was a scrubing sound, also on the C it has a magnito instead of a distributor, and i dont seem to be getting any fire to the cylinders, from what i understand a magnito is not real common on that late of a model tractor though it was an option, it is question like this i need help with. Any assistance will be greatly desired, my e-mail is amrushing13@hotmail.com Thank you

Like the others said, the archieves on this site have a ton of info. You're not the first who;s had to bring an old Farmall back to life.

Also, I recommend you get some reading material:

--Operator's Manual: From Binder Books. These are reprints of the orignal operator's manuals. They're a great source of info. And, don't let the title "Operator's Manual" fool you. There's a ton of good maintenance info in there.

--I&T Shop Service Manual: Published by Intertec publishing company. Not as detailed as the operator's manual. Also, it's definentely written for the professional mechanic, so it's pretty short on step-by-step info. But, a good thing to have on hand.

--Farmall Parts Catalog: From OEM Tractor Parts. These guys sell parts through mail order. Their not the only source of parts out there. But, their catalog is pretty comprehensive, and its a good reference. Plus, the catalog is free!

Between those books, and this forum, you should have all the info you need.

Adam, I agree with Dan from Ore, points get corroded even if they look clean. Fold a piece of fine emery cloth in half and insert between the points and rub and rub and rub and when you think they have got to be clean by now, rub some more! If the mag will fire it will light up when the points are clean. An M that sat in my barn for 15 years wouldn't start, cleaned the points, checked the wires and it started on the second lift of the crank...ask any questions right here on this forum, you will get many good ideas...Mike in Exeter Ontario

If you dont have a point file, emery cloth is the next best thing...then clean the points by running a piece of paper through them....a match cover works fine.....

Adam,
The archives on this forum are an excellent source of information. I can"t imagine a question that hasn"t been asked and answered at least a couple of dozen times. Try a search on magneto, and you"ll quickly see what I mean.
Welcome to the forum. Like me, you will be very glad you found this place.

The best way to find help is just post on this forum. With as many people as read this on a daily basis, you are going to get several answers to each question. For me this is the best way to get what you need.

As far as the magneto goes, you might pop the cap off and try filing the points and resetting the gap. If that doesn't do it, then you probably should take it to a shop.

Dan
